Pay Grade: 9 $23.35/$28.00/$32.65
Primary Purpose:
Supervise daily activities of grounds maintenance operations, athletic stadiums and campuses to ensure district grounds are safe, attractive and in good repair.
Qualification Guidelines:
Education/Certifications:
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Texas Driver's License
Valid certified applicator license for Lawn & Ornamental/Weeds (desirable)
Valid Texas certified M&O Asbestos License (desirable)
Certification in hazardous materials responder and waste management (desirable)
Experience:
Five years' experience in gardening and landscape maintenance
Two years' supervisory experience
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of gardening and landscape maintenance
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics and landscape plans
Ability to perform mathematical calculations
Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
Ability to maintain athletic fields
Ability to operate heavy equipment, including backhoe and trencher
Ability to operate riding or power mower, power tools and hand tools
Ability to repair and trouble shoot sprinkler systems
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise and evaluate work of groundskeepers
Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands:
Tools/Equipment Used: Heavy equipment, including backhoe, trencher and grader blade; tractor and mower, riding and power mower; gas-powered weed trimmer; blower; edger; sprayer; striping machine, garden and hand tools; aerator; truck or van
Posture/Motion/Lifting Continuous walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, carrying and heavy lifting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, outside and inside
Environment Exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals (herbicides and fertilizers), and loud noises. Frequent district-wide travel, occasional prolonged and irregular hours; work indoors and outdoors to conduct on-site inspection of all facilities; work around machinery with moving parts; work on ladders or scaffolding

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Grounds Maintenance and Landscaping
- Assign all grounds work and oversee completion.
- Arrange for contract labor when work cannot be performed by district staff.
- Assign priority to work orders and process them; including tracking of labor and material use.
- Estimate the cost and time required for special projects and order material.
- Interpret blueprints, plans and sketches to carry out landscape designs.
- Establish care and watering schedules, including spraying, fertilizing, pruning, etc.
- Operate and maintain equipment used for grounds operations, including backhoe, trencher, tractor, riding and power mowers, etc.
- Inspect grounds and facilities and initiate needed repairs, including the building and repair of fences and gates.
- Install, test, adjust and repair sprinkler systems.
Safety
- Instruct assigned personnel on proper and safe use of tools and equipment.
- Operate tools, equipment and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; including lifting, climbing, etc.
- Ensure vehicles, equipment and tools are in safe operating condition.
- Inspect and adjust tools and equipment for safety and efficiency.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
Inventory and Equipment
- Coordinate the storage and use of all ground equipment, tools and supplies.
- Prepare, implement and maintain preventive maintenance and repair procedures for grounds.
- Order equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records.
- Recommend replacement of existing equipment.
- Conduct annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies.
Other
- Work irregular hours and respond to after-hour emergency calls as needed.
- Assist in preparation of department budget.
- Assist in recruiting, screening, training and evaluation of grounds employees.
- Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting (time cards, tardiness and absenteeism).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
